spring has spronged
after what seemed like an endless string of storms parading through tahoe since mid february, spring has finally replaced the snowflakes in the air. this tr is a little late, and focuses on the period from 3/21-3/29. it was deep, it was fun, we even had a little sun. with all the storms, most of the time was spent at the resorts or in the nearby sidecountry. we’ve got kirkwood from the spur to melissa coray peak, heavenly from mott to raley’s gulch, and no time whatsoever off the beaten path. course, it was pretty unsafe out there most of the time with the heavy snow events, and then the rapid warming afterward (which led to this slide burying a car on emerald bay road along with some other close calls).

lake tahoe is stoked
well it’s hardly news that the skiing has been fantastic of late here in our little neck of the sierra. often times while skiing I relish in the solitude, clarity of thought, and freedom I get from skiing or just being out in the snow in general. this past week i was reminded how much fun it was to just share the fun with a bunch of like minded individuals. Let’s face it, tahoe’s ski bums are stoked right now, and it’s as fun to watch as the lines we’re skiing. why are we stoked? well we received over 100 inches in the past week starting with wet and heavy and ending with cold and light. the resorts have been going off and except for brief periods the backcountry has been fairly stable. they say picture equals a thousand words, so here’s about 4,300 words and a video too.

last week in lake tahoe
Tahoe’s Junuary ran late this year, and through half of February. Then things got real good real fast. Kirkwood got close to (or more than, not sure) 15 feet in the last 2 weeks of February. We’ll just look at 2/23-3/1, skipping the comp stuff which will end up in that thread.
Video below

pow…not pow
i started off looking for corn, but it became apparent early on that there was only a light crust in the north facing trees and it would likely get burned off in the afternoon temps. plans were changed to a little couloir i had been eyeing for a while now. previous attempt found it had been beaten down by east winds to a rain layer. now it was a thick crust on one side, and unconsolidated pow on the other. there was also plenty of not pow. in fact, had i not got off the beaten path, it would have been just as much fun. still, it’s fun to get the pucker on. gotta remember to close my vents for the down, since it almost became a bigger problem.

and the pictures
heading up
are these aspen??? they’re huge, and they’re widely scattered among other trees rather than in the thicker strands we’re accustomed to

carson country club – a winter golf tr
played eighteen holes today at the carson country club. our threesome included myself, ottime, and FranklezZ. the typical cursing and swearing normally associated with the sport of fuck was replaced with hoots, hollers, and giggles, despite the fact the entire day was spent in the sand trap. on to the match.
hole 1 (tele only)
ottime with his first freeheel air
after FranklezZ tumblezZ, it looks like ottime took the first skin. however, i forced a carryover with a successful tele pow soulplow
hole 2 (another tele only hole)
this features FranklezZ’ bd ascension clipfix vs ottime’s G3s. which is the skin to win? (hint:it’s another carryover, despite that both competitors must add 2 strokes for pant leg in the boot)
hole 3
a long uphill. (you guessed it another carryover)

Saddlebaggery on Conness
with the recent TRs about north peak, a day off from work and the kids, and much desire to go ski something, we decided to hit up saddlebag lake and the most excellent terrain in the area. An early start was called for, so we rolled into camp at 10:15 and booked the 11:00 taxi.
without crampons or ice axe, we were nervous that we might back out upon reaching the north peak couloirs. As we walked along the ridge above the kook chutes we eyed the Y couloir on conness. that definitely looked doable and still worthy of the long drive and hike. now we just needed to keep dry. You can see the Y behind trash here
i believe it was this exact step that crushed the display of my cell phone.
