amgen is in da’ house

the town is definitely showing signs of the amgen tour being around as businesses are shedding off their winter coats and getting ready for the crowds, and the snow. here are some pics from today of some of the preparations

a monumental day

last week we had a little teeny tiny storm that dropped about 4-6″ of moderate density snow. monday i wanted to hit monument peak (the top of heavenly), but turned around at the base of milky way bowl and headed for east peak due to time concerns and very limited visibility. as i reached east peak the clouds parted and i was afforded a view of monument which naturally would haunt me till i went back. the next day was tuesday, so back i went with my buddy, coworker, fellow skier turned telemarker for the day, greg.
monument peak from east peak on monday, 5/9/11

tuesday
it sure is nice to be able to take a picture here without a whole bunch of people taking pictures here…
Heavenly's Pinnacles

greg hikes up to monument with the crystal range in the background. i see ralston, price, agassiz, pyramid, echo, flagpole, cracked crag, and the camp chute area off tallac’s southern flank

at least the views were ok

kirkwood’s closing weekend

first off, there will be none of the shenanigans of the typical closing weekend, since this is a low key journey filled with kid stoke. this was a great way to end another great year at kirkwood. sunshine, great corn, lots of friends, family and fun.

saturday
first we scaled thunder mountain. me with my size 12 collini reversiblurple one piece and 210cm gs race skis mounted with the finest alpine binding ever made

and stu, with his googles

nor sure what this is, but it’s obviously VERY important

then stu left me and i wandered around aimlessly, but mostly diagonally, behind chair 10

and then, out of nowhere, captain zateefah arrived

and he brought the colors

and a battle was fought over the grays

it raged on

but captain zateefah

brought the colors

while this was going on, kirkwood was busy shutting down the lifts. we mosied on down and celebrated the osama raid (which evidently was going on at the time) with some beers and hebrew nationals

then everyone was up for a twilight hike to the red cliffs. this is the second to last day at kirkwood. red cliffs was crawling with people at 7 pm. it reminded me of last july 4th when whole families were hiking around in the rocks skiing. there’s gotta be some way for mountains to recreate that vibe for more of the late spring.

the snowboarder is non-magette (why) monica and they’re grooming the wall

snowskate? check
grab? check
tall can in the air? check

monster in the palm of your hand? hells yeah check!

kendra. and they’re still grooming the wall

noah goes hyooooodge

the captain (kfactor) working hard for the snow skate face shot.

sunday we got there @ 12:30 and headed back behind chair 10 to hang out and play in the snow.
skylyn hittin’ the mini-booter

jasmyn- this is serious business

i told them the key to jumping is to keep the hands forward and smile. she’s got like 3/4 of it down.

there were older kids there gettin’ all spinny and stuff

what, no poles? that’s crazy

this guy was towing the skier in the background up for corn laps, and having some fun on his own.

kids these days

family day

getting set up for the portrait shot above i tried one with the flash, which dropped the shutter speed down to 1/200. came out kind of cool

they suffered a bit on the way out, but i’m in a fartbag carrying their skis

evidently they were holding a pageant or something.

jasmyn wasn’t having any of it. we could hear the yells over at chair 10 at this point. went on for quite a while.

we then slid back in under the sisters and skied down while patrol was setting off their bombs. it was a fun weekend.

canadian ski trip?? put your money where the sun don’t shine

if you’re planning a trip to ski canada next season, congratulations. canada has some fantastic skiing throughout the country.

stay away from sunshine village.

the owners there have fired long time mountain management and ski safety employees after the owner’s son was caught skiing a closed area.
while the legal battle has clouded some issues, two things are painfully clear.
1. the owner is attempting to get out of paying substantial separation packages legally required in canada (think long term employees 20+ years)
2. the owner is a douchebag

other online discussions of the matter have been met with cease and desist orders from the attorneys of sunshine village.

additional info
support ski patrol – official site of the good guys (taken offline as a result of lawsuit?).
sunshine crappy don’t ski here village is located at skibanff.com.

the banff area is beautiful and i wouldn’t suggest you don’t go there
if you do go, here are some fantastic alternatives:
mount norquay
lake louise
castle mountain

crash test dummies

kirkwood, ca. eight days into the fourth month of the year of your lord, 2011.
the movie represents the flail as well as the fun of the day. a bunch of people being fueled on by each others enthusiasm.

spring has spronged

after what seemed like an endless string of storms parading through tahoe since mid february, spring has finally replaced the snowflakes in the air. this tr is a little late, and focuses on the period from 3/21-3/29. it was deep, it was fun, we even had a little sun. with all the storms, most of the time was spent at the resorts or in the nearby sidecountry. we’ve got kirkwood from the spur to melissa coray peak, heavenly from mott to raley’s gulch, and no time whatsoever off the beaten path. course, it was pretty unsafe out there most of the time with the heavy snow events, and then the rapid warming afterward (which led to this slide burying a car on emerald bay road along with some other close calls).

the pov

i’m still fighting the software here (it’s almost as stubborn as me)
some day i’ll get the captions on top

without further ado

lake tahoe is stoked

well it’s hardly news that the skiing has been fantastic of late here in our little neck of the sierra. often times while skiing I relish in the solitude, clarity of thought, and freedom I get from skiing or just being out in the snow in general. this past week i was reminded how much fun it was to just share the fun with a bunch of like minded individuals. Let’s face it, tahoe’s ski bums are stoked right now, and it’s as fun to watch as the lines we’re skiing. why are we stoked? well we received over 100 inches in the past week starting with wet and heavy and ending with cold and light. the resorts have been going off and except for brief periods the backcountry has been fairly stable. they say picture equals a thousand words, so here’s about 4,300 words and a video too.

lake tahoe last week #3

Kfactor, FranklezZ, and Method Mike are stoked

monday was a day of wet snow even at kirkwood. tuesday was much of the same.
here we have ‘Ottime on the rocks’.

or one could opt for ‘Ottime over’.

last week in lake tahoe

Tahoe’s Junuary ran late this year, and through half of February. Then things got real good real fast. Kirkwood got close to (or more than, not sure) 15 feet in the last 2 weeks of February. We’ll just look at 2/23-3/1, skipping the comp stuff which will end up in that thread.

Sounds for wed/thurs
