winter is here for reals now

now that our little bout with springtime is over, lets get this winter thing underway. tuesday we were skiing corn. tuesday night it started to snow. is still hasn’t really stopped.

Here is the video from all three days

wednesday toby and i hit up kirkwood both inbounds and out. once we started, each run got deeper and better and the tracks were filled between runs. it was my first day on my new lhasas, which i had mounted in a panic on the way out the door. there’s three generations of lhasas in this pic.

they seemed to work ok

toby gettin sum of the deepest turns of the day

thursday rolled around and the skies were blue for a bit. the temps stayed cold and the sun hurt nothing. nacho and i hit up the red cliffs area outside kirkwood all morning. we had it all to ourselves (sadly). here is the damage

i skied inbounds for a little bit and then we took a walk in the valley

friday myself, tahoebc, and spats hit waterhouse peak, with a second run down into hope valley. conditions were excellent up high, but sparse at the valley floor
nacho ear-waving on the peak. the steven peak ampitheatre sits behind

that’s nacho taking a leisurely stroll when tahoebc, dressed as a tree, comes out of nowhere. (unfortunately i don’t think this was the hit that’s gonna teach nacho the lesson, but it makes for a fun video anyway)

spats on the upper ridge heading down into hope valley

tahoebc on the same ridge

when saturday rolled around, we had a group of like minded individuals wanting to test out the burly base with their burly bases
we decided to hit the zone that isn’t quite kirkwood since there’s plenty to jump off mixed into relatively safe lines.
ottime drops in skiers right of the spur

and then gives a different meaning to drops in

and yet a third meaning, dropping into deeper layers

ottime drops into one of the lower lines as nacho watches on

i like how dynamic this picture is. i only had my big lens with me so i had to go with a portrait orientation.

this little section is littered with cliffs currently
Court rolls off a cliff spine

another shelf below, with another set of cliffs. ottime seems set to go off this year i think

not to be outdone, schralphmacchio gets both his planks and all ten knuckles out of the snow simultaneously, a difficult feat for someone new to the art of two plankin

ottime lines up the next feature

my first thought was ‘don’t drag that knuckle’! my second was ‘OMG is that your lens i see behind the hand?!’

the last day of spring, 2012

the last day of spring was a strange one in 2012. mostly because it fell on december eleventh. the spring was filled with showers, but there were no may flowers.
there was corn though, and there was sun. and skiing is always fun

nacho and hutchski enjoying the scenery and spring like conditions

i’m the king of the mountain!

i’m the queen of the mountain!

but i still like to perform menial tasks. like building this bench

kirkwood is always closed this late in the spring. not a soul on the mountain

fly nacho fly

hutchski enjoying the corn

rock solid form

but then she punched a puppy in the face OMGEEE!

so he’s gonna karate her!

kickin it, enjoying the spring before lap 2

going big, or at least medium

spazzes are everywhere in the spring. here’s two

last run of the spring

big fun!

then it snowed
and snowed
and snowed

when in doubt, go skiing!

woke up this morning with plans to hike with hutchski, nacho and two other doggies out to elephant back, or something simple like that. it was gloomy and we were hoping for corn conditions. i think we were playing cancellation chicken where neither one of us wanted to be the one to call it, but either one of us would have been ok with the decision. still, we loaded up the car and headed west, noting how things looked a tad less dark that way.
at carson pass, we put 3 out of 4 boots on before deciding it was too cold, windy, and rock hard to warrant heading out into the flat light. we opted to keep going to danberg in the valley. that way we could just take a low angle descent if everything is frozen solid. before we got to kirkwood, the open field to the left of the cliffs behind caples lake caught our eye. easy approach. appeared to bathed in what we were calling sunlight. low angle enough we couldn’t get in trouble.
these are taz (front and center) and yogi

and this is where we went. you already know nacho and hutchski

and in case you forgot. taz and yogi

our first run was a tad firm, and then not, and then firm again. the views were consistent though

there’s the crew. “phew. we’re done, right?”

no way man. the fun has just begun.

at least for me. for hutchski, the work had just begun

fkna

i was having a good day, but then my thong got all bunched up on one side. i hate that!

hutchski going for it

but she hooks the branch. i didn’t see that coming.

crews were on hand immediately to check on her

my turn to ski the trees

then hutchski showing off for caples lake

just a hair sooner and this pic would be soooo money.

and then it was time to go. but first some sp-icy crusty occasional pow back to the lake

and back the way we came

a bad day skiing is better than a good day doing just about anything else. but this was a good day skiing

winter storm brutus – weather channel product in review

if you haven’t heard by now, the weather channel will be naming all winter storms.
this is how they determine if a storm is worthy of a name.
$$$

from weather.com
events that involve snow and ice or extreme temperatures or wind or a combination; that significantly affect travel; and that the network thinks people need to know about.
events involving a non-insignificant amount of fresh pow-pow
situations where cement of the sierra variety may be laid

brutus was such a storm. he came in with little fanfare other than being the second named winter storm of all time from the weather.com weather overlords. here in the sierra the call was for maybe 10-15″ inches in the best locations (kirkwood) over three days. before brutus, kirkwood had more snow already than they have opened with in past years. conditions had been good to very good for weeks.
10/24

11/02

brutus was an over achiever, bringing in 15″ the first day of the storm. but even with all their new vail technology in the snowmaking realm, and 15-18″ new snow on top of their already impressive base, kirkwood’s response to questions about opening was

Snow makers blow’n, ramps built, over the next week…We’re on it & will pull the trigger when “we” are ready….
We are looking at the 21st as the “official” opening day… But, and I say but, we might just pull the trigger sooner then you think! We want it just as bad as you want it my friend!

given that there were well over 100 people riding the mountain sunday, without lifts, and the kirkwood team was in sacramento marketing, i’d say its apparent some folks just want it more than vailwood.
there’s plenty of snow. stop using that as an excuse. you don’t wanna open?

fine by me if the lifts don’t spin at all. because….

friday it was like this. wehen the resort opens, the doggies will be gone. 🙁

summer turns to winter

with our ability to get our october skiing fix in (and keep our monthly streaks alive) in serious doubt here in tahoe, we decided to head north to the friendly confines of oregon. we would plan to hit a patch on bachelor, or if we had to we could drive up to hood and actually pay for the opportunity. as the trip got closer it became apparent that we would likely have snow in tahoe when we got back so the skiing took a back seat to the climbing and general vacationing (drinking).
leaving town, ashley had to get something from her house with the keys back in her car. let the climbing begin

1st stop, sunset at emigrant lake outside of ashland oregon. nacho watches ashley’s first climb of the trip

this route sits by itself on the shore of the lake. i believe it’s called pocket change (5.8, part of aqua wall). definitely unsure though

i was up next. seemed fairly easy which is why i’m wondering if it’s the 5.8.

next up was pet cemetery. also a 5.8 but much longer

it was roughly this long

next up, smith rock.

sport climbing mecca.

and home of nacho’s doppelganger

we were just there to top rope though, which means rope de dope rock

our interweb guide said it was a short scramble up to the top of the block…

first line was shamu, a 5.9?? i count over 50 people in the view across the river

later on i did float like a butterfly, 5.10b

then it was back to bend

and their breweries

next day we were heading to the coast via crater lake. we got to the recent snowline and nacho couldn’t wait to get out

it would be foolish to not get our october turns in, since the snow had yet to fall in tahoe. plus we brought all the gear all this way.

i was here last winter, but the weather never cleared enough to see the lake. the views are amazing

with all the new snow, nacho dug a pit to assess stability

a little misdirection gave me a small head start (that will be the only time he falls for it this year).

he caught me right away though

then ashley completed her first year of skiing every month!

then it was back in the car heading toward the coast. natural bridges over the rogue river

redwood forests – i mustache you, does this tree make my bumper look fat?

and to the wet coast the next day.

nacho touches the pacific for the first time

it made him crazy

ashley will use this pic in the nacho custody battle no doubt

we raced though driving rain toward the mouth of the russian river and the home of sunset boulders.
here is a painting i made depicting what might happen if nacho saw a deer in the area

the skies cleared when we arrived, leaving behind enough clouds for the boulders to live up to their name

then we watched the giants clinch the world series berth over fish n chips in bodega bay. ’twas a good trip

fun times on tallac

fall days make for great hiking and mount tallac has always been one of my favorite destinations any time of year. just the approach by car around fallen leaf lake is enough to get the juices flowing

neither ashley nor nacho had ever been, so it would be fun to head up with them on their first time.
nacho was stoked

ashley, not so much

that’s ok though. nacho and i were still happy to drag her along

cathedral lake

nacho is not a fan of gymnastics. they must be stopped

ashley is a fan though. hup!! me? i just like to rap, yo!

after cathedral lake we opted for some scrambling. we couldn’t get nacho past the crux so there were some tense moments for ashley getting him back down

they survived though. wet doggy kisses for everyone

nacho. so stoked to be almost there.

great views everywhere

ashley and nacho pose in front of tahoe, emerald bay, cascade lake, and a unicorn

me too

ashley peers down the cross

on the peak overlooking gilmore lake and desolation

proof that we actually made it

there was even a register! 😉

“i used to live right there”

two best friends soak in the views (and a sandwich)

one for cheetoing.com

and one for nacho

go gators, beat lsu today!!

that’s right

this is where i teach ashley a thing or two about gymnastics

she’s a quick learner

then we ran back down the ugly pile of rocks

september, check. and some fun down south

the bleak winter of 11-12 has left us with little in the way of choices for getting turns in the late summer months. we hit up dunderberg the first time in august and now we were back again to check off september.

this time we had to take al subie so we could only make it to alien head lake rather than all the way to jacks glacier.
4 wheelin

even so, the hike to the hidden glacier was a short one. we were making turns in no time.
hutchski on hidden (samurai) glacier

summer skiing

summer skiing

then it was time for a break by the lake. and by break i mean taking the shovel and knocking down the sun cups enough to make an in run to the lake. and a beer
summer skiing

nacho was very excited
summer skiing

the in run was still bumpy and it was hard to get enough speed
summer skiing

fortunately i was able to make it to where i could stand. i made it further on my subsequent tries, but never all the way across.
summer skiing

a short but rocky hike back brought us above alien head lake with a view of al subie
summer skiing

after my failed attempts in the water, i was ready to get some dry land under my skis
summer skiing

summer skiing

admiring my tracks 😉
summer skiing

then it was down south to yosemite. hutch had actually visited with her parents weeks before and stayed in the same row of tent cabins that the folks that caught the hanta virus had stayed
summer skiing

we went for some climbing, but only ended up bouldering
summer skiing

summer skiing

and sightseeing, the locals were unimpressed

lassen volcanic park over memorial day weekend

anyone in Tahoe knows the season isn’t over until at least memorial day, when we get our memorial day storm. this year would be no different, but most of tahoe has no base left, so volcano skiing would be our plan to reap the benefits. plans were made, shifts were covered, cars were packed
the playas
hutchy, a new mag

powdork (not so new)

longshortlong (don’t know why short is in there, he requires 2 pics!) and schralphmacchio

nickie

and of course our sponsored athlete nacho, who was a stowaway on this trip due to park regulations

as we set off from tahoe, the skies opened. they wouldn’t shut for several days

hutchy and i rolled into lassen at 3 on friday, 3 hours late. we figured we missed hooking up with the crew and elected to sightsee. in the bumpass hell lot we ran into dookey67, who was also 3 hours late. so we sightskied instead on diamond peak

diamond peak has a huge rock outcropping on top. hutchy likes to climb such things. i did a poor job taking this pic cuz it doesn’t show the size of the rock

this is what it looks like from our campsite

the exposure poma

nacho, who use to play left field for the giants, shows off a little

then it was time to ski
powdork

hutchy

dookey

back at camp, we didn’t want to set up because of the never ending snow/graupel downpour. so we hopped in the car and drove
to red bluff, where we found tips, a local dive bar

day 2 was still socked in, so we drove up to bumpass hell to see what we could

and ran into this guy (and his mail order bride) stuck in the snowbank. we drove all this way with our shovels, so we may as well put them to use

we had spotted some fun lines before the top which would also let me get off the road quickly before anyone saw our stowaway, who was not allowed on the snow within the park

on ski heil peak

it was kind of deepish

in the middle of this chute i had to take off my skis and wax them. then it was fun

as a result, they were heading down when we were heading up

our camp was above a river fed by sulfur hot springs

beers were drank, longshortlong even brought some home made limoncello

the stars even appeared for a little bit

and sunday dawned bluebird

hutchy and i had to be back at work in tahoe at 4, so we started up earlier than the rest. still late by most standards though

we took a route that included some unnecessary climbing to above the upper lot

but also allowed us to ski down

nacho and hutchy play chicken

then it was up lassen proper, but we didn’t have time to make the peak.
hutchy

nacho

me

hutchy gets tubed on the way out

before declaring victory

despite driving fast and taking chances, we did not make it to work on time.

i’m guessing schralph will have some pictures and stories to add

the new kirkwood (sucks)

back on feb 22, 2012, vail resorts bought kirkwood mountain resort. since then things have been downhill. twice the resort has had to close or seriously curtail operations for inbounds avalanches. their airbag came out of it’s restraints and blew across the base area derailing chair 6, an express quad, thus requiring an emergency evacuation. whilst these are extremely rare events, they are nowhere near as rare as the managerial screwups that closed out the season.

  • vail resorts announced that kirkwood would be open “until the snow is gone”. they are closed with a huge base by any other resorts standards. alpine (whose base is 1,000′ lower) is still open from the base.
  • for the first time ever midweek and 6-wood holders were denied access when their passes weren’t good on closing weekend despite the fact that kirkwood was closed all week when their passes would have been good.
  • vail resorts brought in security that went through backpacks and pulled passes on closing day. a typical vail move; atypical for kirkwood (and any other resort that cares).

from http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlQ5TPDmWoE
i think the biggest thing that the future holds in our mind is that we preserve what it is today, and we don't make big changes to what makes kirkwood kirkwood

from onthesnow.com
Well, for our pass holders it adds another dimension to what we offer. I think particularly for our pass holders, it adds a third unique mountain product to the mix. So Kirkwood has great steeps, a great pure alpine and big mountain experience. It's a really cool vibe with a small community feel and we're going to cherish and respect that. With all of our resorts, we like each one of them to have their own strong identity, and Kirkwood brings a whole different personality into the mix for us.

kirkwood used to be the locals resort. the only thing they’re giving locals now is the finger
kirkwood gives locals the finger

update, 5/10/12
hiked up kirkwood today to make sure i wasn’t wrong about them having enough snow. i hate being wrong though i do it frequently. it was not in this case here.
the top of 6. clearly plenty of snow
Kirkwood is closed with this much snow

the top of chair 10 still has tons of snow (literally)
Kirkwood is closed with this much snow

and the bottom of 10 and 11. no issues here
Kirkwood is closed with this much snow

bottom of chairs 5 and 6 ready to go
Kirkwood is closed with this much snow

so what’s up kirkwood. clearly the snow isn’t gone. clearly we can still ride.
