3/4 moon on round top

having gotten some recent info that things were looking good at carson pass, and armed with a new pair of bros, toby and i headed up to round top at the crisp early hour of noon:30. we headed up towards the couloir and ran into two other like minded souls. they had already skied the lookers left shot (which was the one skied the previous day giving us our info) and they were headed back up to ski the center couloir. this left us the main coolie.
the guy holding his ski had gotten himself into a pinch by skinning up to where he thought he could switch over. as soon as he stepped out of his skis he started to slide on the 4 inches of snow covering last years ice. he started well above the legs you see in the top of the pic. i was all, “yay, ice”.

the two others headed straight up while we took off to the right out of view.

the texture just above toby is last years snow sticking out. it was not pleasant

after two good turns above, toby is in a somewhat controlled slide on the ice layer

alpine meadows and kirkwood team up. is there more to come?

november 9, 2011 update
turns out there may have been a bit more in store as rumors of a JMA/KSL purchase of kirkwood have been circulating for a while. now they are starting to surface and the details are a bit sketchy, but here is the gist. the alpine/squaw merger may be toast due to problems clearing escrow. the announcement of a jma (alpine)/kirkwood merger is imminent. we’ll see how the pieces fall.

news is hittin’ the inter toobz that alpine meadows and kirkwood will are offering a combined pass this season. alpine already has it posted on their site. The unfiltered pass now includes unlimited skiing at alpine, and a full season pass at kirkwood with blackout dates around xmas, presidents day, and mlk day. for kirkwood passholders, you must have the premium pass in order to receive an alpine meadows pass. at this time, the kirkwood premium pass (which also includes special line privileges) is selling for $500 while the unfiltered pass is $699 (kirkwood’s web site has not updated since the news broke). there is no info on the alpine page about whether kirkwood’s premium pass will also include privileges at homewood and red mountain (alpine passes include these). presumably they will since alpine passholders are also getting benefits at durango mountain resort. a great start to the season – october pow

just like last year, october 6th would be my first real powder day of the year. both years i skied on the 5th, but the turns were back seat and tentative. both years on the 6th we were able to turn the throttle up.
looking down my first run of the year (october 5th)

looking back up after two laps. the tree on the rocks in the center was the point of the last pic

further down i found some worry free turns

squalpenwolf – born to be wild

originally posted on 6/1/2011
turns out there is a letter of intent out there describing how ksl (squaw valley) plans to buy alpine meadows from jma. the new fraternity will evidently be called kslamajama. since none of this is finalized, and the purchase of the missing piece (whitewolf) is still only a rumor, we are still just hoping for (or hoping to avoid) the squalppinwolf transformation. depending upon your view point, this is either the second coming of skiing to tahoe, or the ruination of your secret powder stash. i saw steppenwolf back in florida. the crowd was chanting for ‘born to be wild’ when john kay stepped up to the mike and said, “this ain’t fuckin’ burger king, you can’t have it your way.”

in other words, change she is a coming. a rough estimate of the pieces of the puzzle. squaw=blue, whitewolf=purple, alpine=red

if connected via white wolf, this would be the second largest resort in north america, and only slightly smaller than whistler-blackcomb. Continue reading

skifishbumming at highland lakes

with the school year coming up rapidly, the kids sitting around inside, and me desperately needing to get off the grid we hatched a last minute plan to get the hell out of dodge. highland lakes was our destination, though we had never been to the campground there. i had seen the area from folgers peak a few years back, and was confident it would hold what we needed. snow, flowers, and fish. fortunately, we brought steaks in case the latter didn’t work out.
we arrived in the late afternoon and immediately knew that the snow was not going to be an issue. in fact, since the snow started just off the trailhead, i was bummed that i had only brought skis for myself. i figured i could set up my tent and head up, leaving the tripod behind for jasmyn to get pictures of the descent. here is my view from the top. you can see my blue tent at the far side of the lake in the triangle formed by three roads.

a close up of the moon from the camp site. the snow was fairly smooth, despite the look. it wasn’t a particularly warm day and it was still a tad firm.

got back to camp in time to start the fire and catch some sunset pics. somehow on the way up and didn’t notice that the last bit connected to the lake, and bailed early. that would give me something to do on tuesday anyway.

nor did the views

nor did the snow. thats round top lake, caples lake, and tahoe in the background

the snow was about as good as it gets in august

the winter that keeps on giving

it’s obvious we had a great winter last year. the rivers are still high, the lake is approaching it’s natural rim. the wildflowers are weeks or months behind schedule. some are going to have to skip this year altogether.
oh, and there is an abundance of snow. lots of snow. tons of snow.
so, lets go ride.
thursday, july 22nd at round top (carson pass)

skiing tahoe on the fourth of july

well here it is the fourth of july and many of our normal summer fun time activities just aren’t happening yet due to the still giant snowpack in them thar hills. fortunately, many area resorts have taken a “if you can’t beat ’em you might as well join ’em” attitude, which we applaud. squaw valley, kirkwood, alpine meadows, and sugar bowl are all spinning lifts in some fashion over the holiday weekend.
here’s what’s on the table
squaw valley – open saturday, sunday and monday, july 4. the plan is to run the funitel, gold coast, shirley lake, links, cable car, and siberia. this is a way better offering than squaw had last year. squaw will have a free concert (big head todd & the monsters) along with a fireworks show on sunday, july 3. tickets are $49. next years passes are good. last years are not. squaw’s take

kirkwood – open only saturday and sunday from 7:30-2pm (chair 6 only). saturday is the volunteer fire dept bbq from 3-6pm. sunday is live music with the kingtones leading up to the sunday night fireworks show. tickets are $35. next years passes are good. last years are not. (last independence day at the wood)
